JUNEAU, Alaska, April 17 (UPI) -- A proposal to legalize the recreational use of marijuana may make its way to voters' primary ballots in Alaska next year, proponents of the move said.
The first step was taken Tuesday toward putting on the August 2014 primary ballot the measure allowing adults at least 21 years of age to use pot recreationally, the Anchorage Daily News reported.
Three prime sponsors of the measure filed an application with the state lieutenant governor's office for an initiative petition along with signatures from what they say are at least 100 additional supporters, the Daily News reported.
If passed, Alaska would be the third state in the nation to allow the recreational use of marijuana. Colorado and Washington adopted ballot measures legalizing recreational use of marijuana in November.
The measure would permit state residents to cultivate marijuana for personal use and would tax and regulate marijuana sales, the Daily News reported.
The measure would allow the Legislature to establish a Marijuana Control Board. Until such a board would be created, the Alcohol Beverage Control Board would regulate marijuana sales.
Under the proposal, Alaskans at least 21 years of age could possess as much as an ounce of marijuana, or six marijuana plants, three of which may be mature, the Daily News said.
