Church van crashes in Florida; one killed, 18 others injured

KENANSVILLE, Fla., April 14 (UPI) -- At least one person was killed and 18 were injured when a bus carrying a church group went out of control and rolled over on Florida's Turnpike, police said.

The crash occurred about 7:10 p.m. EDT Saturday outside of Kenansville in south Osceola County, the Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel reported.

The driver lost control of the van after one of its tires separated and the van rolled over several times, the Florida Highway Patrol said. The van was carrying 19 or 20 people at the time of the crash.

A 46-year-old woman from North Miami was thrown from the van and died at the scene, Florida Highway Patrol spokeswoman Sgt. Kim Montes said.

All of the injured -- one of whom suffered serious injuries -- were transported to hospitals.

The van was registered to GSC Community Involvement Inc., a non-profit youth-development group based in Miami.

Daphney Raphael, of Miami, said the van was carrying members of her church group to Orlando. Another group member said the group is based in Haiti.

The name of the group was not reported.
