ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., April 12 (UPI) -- A 2-year-old Florida girl whose feet were severed by a lawn mower will walk and run again "and be just as spunky as before," her mother says.

Ireland Nugent has undergone two surgeries. Her father, Jeremiah Nugent, accidentally backed over her with a lawn mower in the driveway of their home north of St. Petersburg, cable channel Bay News 9, St. Petersburg, reported Friday.

The Wednesday accident severed the child's feet at the ankles and injured her hand.

Mother Nicole Nugent says her daughter is already showing improvement, squeezing her hand and listening to her voice.

"This is not going to stop Ireland," Nicole Nugent said.

"We can fix her legs. She will walk and run again and be just as spunky as before," the mother said.

Of her own welfare, Nicole Nugent said, "I'm OK. I have to be OK for my daughter."

Her husband, however, is "not holding up as [well] as I am."

Another surgery is scheduled for Saturday, with a possible fourth on Monday to completely close Ireland's wounds.
