HARRISON TOWNSHIP, Mich., April 10 (UPI) -- A recent explosion and fire in Michigan connected to processing marijuana to extract hash oil may be a harbinger of more to come danger, officials say.
The incident that injured four people at a Macomb County apartment March 24 occurred as use of the potent drug -- and its dangerous processing method -- becomes increasingly popular, the Detroit Free Press reported Wednesday.
The explosion, which knocked the building off its foundation, involved the use of butane, Macomb County Sheriff's Capt. Elizabeth Darga said.
"If you've got fumes and an open flame, you've got disaster," Darga said.
There is disagreement whether cannabis oil is permitted under Michigan's medical marijuana law, the Free Press said.
Three of the people injured experienced severe burns and the fire caused about $500,000 in damage.
Darga said no criminal charges had been filed and the case was sent for review to the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office.
