Police find guns, marijuana in house at collapsed construction site

CHARLOTTE, N.C., April 9 (UPI) -- Police said they found firearms and a marijuana plant inside the North Carolina home at the collapsed construction site where two children were buried.

Two cousins -- a 6-year-old girl and a 7-year-old boy -- died Sunday when the 24-foot-deep hole in the ground they were playing in collapsed and covered them in dirt.

The bodies of the children, whose names were not reported, were recovered Monday morning after hours of digging and searching.

Jordan Keely Arwood, the boy's father, was operating a backhoe nearby at the construction site at the time of the accident, though police are unsure why he was digging the pit, ABC News reported. Arwood did not have building permits for the construction.

The Lincoln County Sheriff's Department searched Arwood's mobile home near the construction site and found firearms and a marijuana plant. They said he is a convicted felon is not allowed to own firearms.
