LEBANON, Tenn., April 9 (UPI) -- The wife of a sheriff's deputy was shot and killed at the couple's Lebanon, Tenn., home by a 4-year-old during a weekend family gathering, police said.
The Wilson County Sheriff's Office said Josephine G. Fanning, 48, was pronounced dead at her home Saturday, The (Nashville) Tennessean reported Monday.
The shooting occurred in a bedroom Wilson County Deputy Daniel Fanning was looking at guns with another relative, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said. The 4-year-old and victim walked into the bedroom where a loaded weapon was on the bed, TBI spokeswoman Kristin Helm said. The child picked up the gun and fired, killing Josephine Fanning.
"[It] appears accidental at this time," Helm said.
Helm said there was alcohol at the gathering and Daniel Fanning was off-duty at the time of the shooting, The Tennessean reported.
The gun fired by the 4-year-old relative was Fanning's personal weapon, Helm said.
