NEW YORK, April 5 (UPI) -- Two psychiatrists say a New York nanny charged with fatally stabbing two children in her care is fit to proceed to trial, a judge said Friday.
Judge Gregory Carro said two state psychiatrists had interviewed Yoselyn Ortega and went over her "rather voluminous" medical records before coming to the conclusion she is able to participate in her defense in a meaningful way, The New York Times reported.
Ortega's attorney, Valerie Van Leer-Greenberg, told the judge she intended to challenge the findings, the newspaper said.
Ortega was handcuffed and wore a prison-issue jumpsuit with her hair in cornrow braids when she appeared in State Supreme Court in Manhattan. She remained silent during the hearing with her head tilted downward, the newspaper said.
A Spanish interpreter translated the proceedings for her.
Ortega has been held without bail at the prison ward for psychiatric patients at Elmhurst Hospital Center.
She is accused of fatally stabbing Lucia Krim, 6, and Leo Krim, 6, in the children's home Oct. 25 while their mother, Marina Krim, was at a swimming lesson with her 3-year-old daughter.
The mother found Ortega in the bathroom stabbing herself in the throat.
