NYC fast-food workers strike 1 day for pay

NEW YORK, April 5 (UPI) -- About 400 fast-food restaurant workers who staged a one-day strike in New York City drew support from two mayoral candidates, officials said.

Workers demanded improved benefits, a wage of $15 an hour and the right to join unions during their walkout Thursday, the New York Daily News reported.

The strike affected about 70 establishments in the McDonald's, Burger King, KFC and Domino's chains.

At least three individual restaurants were forced to close because their employees joined the strike, the newspaper said.

The mayoral candidates who joined the strike in a show of support are Public Advocate Bill de Blasio and City Comptroller John Liu.
