Suspected cop killer to survive injuries

WILLIAMSON, W.Va., April 4 (UPI) -- A man suspected of fatally shooting a West Virginia county sheriff is expected to recover from gunshot wounds, police said.

Tennis Melvin Maynard, 37, of Delbarton is suspected of walking up to Mingo County Sheriff Eugene Crum Wednesday and shooting him at point-blank range as the officer was eating lunch inside his vehicle in downtown Williamson, the Charleston Gazette reported.

Maynard then allegedly fled the scene in his vehicle.

Later Wednesday, Maynard was shot by a Mingo County sheriff's deputy after he got out of his car and pointed a gun at deputies, State Police spokesman Sgt. Michael Baylous said.

Maynard was arrested and brought to a hospital. He is expected to survive his injuries, the Gazette said.
