Bill eyes armed guards in Ind. schools

April 3, 2013 at 1:04 PM   |   Comments

INDIANAPOLIS, April 3 (UPI) -- A person with a loaded gun would be required at all Indiana schools during class hours under a bill approved by a state legislative committee, officials say.

Both parents and elected officials have mixed concerns about the proposal, WSBT-TV in South Bend reported Wednesday.

The bill passed by the House committee would create "school protection officers" who would be authorized to carry a weapon. The position could be filled by police officers, school officials, or someone not involved in education.

The bill would apply to both public and private schools.

One parent, April Phillips, the mother of a 3-year-old boy, said she supported the bill because "it could help keep out the people that try to make it in with a gun."

Another mom said she didn't want guns in school

"I just don't feel that guns should be anywhere," said Deb Miner, whose daughter is in high school.

William Sniadecki, a member of the South Bend Community Corp. board, says he supports safety in schools, but wasn't sure the bill was the answer.

"It needs to be thought out a lot more than what's on that bill right now," he said.
