DETROIT, April 2 (UPI) -- The Detroit City Council says it plans to keep meeting despite a lawsuit's claim it's illegal for it to do so under the state's emergency manager law.
Robert Davis, a member of the Highland Park school board, is seeking a court injunction barring the City Council from meeting because it no longer has any authority, The Detroit News reported Tuesday.
"We are going to keep doing our jobs every day until we are told not to," Council President Charles Pugh said Monday in response to Davis urging it not to hold meetings on Monday and Tuesday.
Pugh noted that emergency manager Kevyn Orr last week restored salaries and benefits for the council members and Mayor Dave Bing.
Davis' suit asks the court to prevent meetings of the council "unless and until" Orr authorizes it to do so. He also challenged the validity of any votes cast during those meetings.
Separately, activist Malik Shabazz attempted to present Orr, Bing and the council president with April Fools' "gifts" of Oreo cookies, a racial put-down. Shabazz and other protesters, including the Rev. Charles Williams II, then chanted and prayed in a City Hall corridor.
"There will be no rest until democracy is restored to Detroit," Williams said during the demonstration.
