Sanders faced 12 years in prison. He was sentenced Friday after an emotional hearing during which family members spoke.

Sanders told deputies his wife begged him to shoot her because she was experiencing excruciating pain.

A doctor had determined Virginia Sanders had gangrene in a foot just days before the shooting, Sanders said.

George Sanders was arrested after calling a caregiver and telling her he had shot his wife, KPHO-TV said.
