Face transplant recipient gets married

FORT WORTH, Texas, March 31 (UPI) -- Dallas Wiens, the first recipient of a full face transplant in the United States, got married in Texas to a woman he met in a support group, his family said.

Wiens, 27, of North Texas, married Jamie Nash, 29, Saturday at Ridglea Baptist Church in Fort Worth, WFAA-TV, Dallas/Fort Worth, reported.

"I am blessed beyond measure that you have chosen me, and I love you with all of my heart," Wiens told Nash during the ceremony.

This was the second wedding for both Wiens and Nash, The Dallas Morning News reported.

"This is a giant step for him being independent," said Sue Peterson, Wiens' grandmother. "He's marrying someone who can share about their pain that they've gone through, and their recoveries. They have fantastic attitudes about why they're where they are."

Wiens and Nash met in 2011 at a support group for burn victims. Wiens was badly burned in an electrical accident in 2008 and Nash in a car wreck in 2010.

Wiens underwent more than 30 surgeries to restore function and form to his face and received the nation's first full face transplant at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.

"Things happened that I didn't think ever could be possible for me, and you made them possible," Nash said. "You gave me hope, and you gave me tender love that I will always treasure."
