Woman sentenced to 60 years in horse theft

EL DORADO, Ark., March 28 (UPI) -- Wendi Cox was sentenced to 60 years in prison for abducting and mistreating horses owned by Southern Arkansas University students.

A jury found Cox, 38, of Haworth, Okla., guilty of stealing five horses, a trailer and horse equipment in the November 2011 incident at the Mulerider Stables on the campus of the Magnolia, Ark., school.

Deputy Prosecuting Attorney David Butler said the sentence indicates Cox will spend about 10 years in prison.

The emaciated condition of four rodeo-competition horses, found tied to trees two weeks after their abduction, and the slaughter of a fifth angered rodeo enthusiasts across the country, the Magnolia (Ark.) Reporter said Thursday.
