ENFIELD, Conn., March 27 (UPI) -- The Enfield, Conn., town council approved the hiring of armed officers for its school system, a response to school security after the Newtown, Conn., massacre.

The council's memorandum of understanding, passed Monday, will place armed officers in schools beginning in the next school year, and specifies those hired must have experience in law enforcement, corrections, the military or a related field.

The school board approved the agreement in a 5-4 vote Tuesday. The initiative is estimated to cost $650,000 for the first year, the Hartford (Conn.) Courant reported Wednesday.

The Dec. 14 massacre of 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown has prompted communities across Connecticut to re-evaluate school security, the newspaper said. The responses have included improved entry security, better door locks and the hiring of security guards.
