SAN DIEGO, March 22 (UPI) -- A sailor aboard the USS Essex, in port in San Diego, was found with a gunshot wound and later died of her injuries, a naval officer said.

The ship's medical personnel transferred the unidentified sailor, 19, to the city's UCSD Trauma Center, where she was pronounced dead Thursday, Navy media operations officer Rick Chernitzer said.

It was unclear how the shooting occurred, KNSD-TV, San Diego, said Friday.
