KINGSVILLE, Texas, March 22 (UPI) -- At least six undocumented immigrants died and nine others were injured in the crash of a truck chased by police at a Navy facility in Texas, officials said.
Kingsville, Texas, police were chasing the truck, which was carrying 15 passengers, Wednesday when it sped past the main gate at the Naval Air Station in Kingsville, CNN reported Thursday.
Guards at the base deployed a pop-up barrier near a second security post but the driver slammed the truck through the obstacle without slowing down, base spokesman John Gagne said.
"It's quite possible this guy [the driver] didn't even know where he was," Gagne said.
It was not clear why police began chasing the truck, which carried immigrants from Guatemala and Honduras, CNN reported.
Greg Palmore, a spokesman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, said the victims' consulates had been notified.
