LOS ANGELES, March 15 (UPI) -- The city of Los Angeles has agreed to give a $40,000 cash settlement to replace the truck of two women injured as police sought fugitive Christopher Dorner.
Los Angeles police Chief Charlie Beck had pledged to provide a new pickup truck to Margie Carranza, 47, and her mother, Emma Hernandez, 71. They were injured in February while delivering newspapers in Torrance, Calif., when police riddled their blue Toyota Tacoma with bullets, mistaking the vehicle for the gray Nissan Titan Dormer was believed to have been driving.
Hernandez was shot twice in the back, and Carranza was injured by broken glass.
Police offered the women a used truck, which they agreed to, but were told they'd have to pay taxes on it as if it was a prize.
The women complained through their lawyer, Glen Jonas, Tuesday that having to pay taxes on the vehicle was "a slap in the face."
City Attorney Carmen Trutanich announced Thursday the women would instead receive the $40,000 settlement, which is separate from any other compensation they may receive for their injuries, the Los Angeles Times reported.
"Now that we resolved the issue of the truck, we can now move forward in this matter in an attempt to resolve the other issues in this case related to personal injury aspects," Trutanich said.
