Record heat wave for Los Angeles area

LOS ANGELES, March 15 (UPI) -- A high-pressure system produced temperatures in the mid-90s in the Los Angeles area, breaking records, forecasters said.

A record-high 93 degrees was recorded at Bob Hope Airport in Burbank, breaking the old record of 89 set in 1994, the National Weather Service said.

Woodland Hills saw its old record of 83 degrees for this date in 1994 smashed by 11 degrees.

Bonnie Bartling, weather specialist at the National Weather Service said the high-pressure system causing the record temperatures is expected to break down in the next few days, making way for a cold weather system.

She said it's possible the cold weather system won't make its way all the way to Los Angeles, but if it does, the city could see temperatures drop by as much as 20 degrees, the Los Angeles Times reported Friday.

Meanwhile, portions of the Midwest could see some snow Friday as a fast-moving Alberta Clipper enters the region, Accuweather reported.

Bands of snow are expected to fall in Chicago, Detroit and portions of North Dakota, Wisconsin and Minnesota.
