NYC officer hurt, 50 arrested at protest

NEW YORK, March 14 (UPI) -- About 50 people were arrested, and a New York police officer hurt, in a second night of violence spurred by the fatal police shooting of a teen, officials say.

The injured officer was hit in the face by a brick as protesters swarmed the streets of a Brooklyn neighborhood Wednesday night, the New York Post reported.

The violence began after Kimani's parents did not show up at a 7 p.m. vigil for their son. As many as 200 protesters took part in the disturbance.

Mahnefah Gray, the sister of Kimani Gray, the 16-year-old boy shot and killed by officers Saturday, was among those arrested.

Officers said Kimani was shot after he pointed a loaded pistol at two officers.

An autopsy found the teen, who the Post said was reputed to have been a gang member, had been shot in the front and back by a total of seven bullets, indicating he was facing the officers when the shooting began.
