Mich. man says someone killed his bees

March 13, 2013 at 5:24 PM

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich., March 13 (UPI) -- A Michigan man fighting a zoning battle over his bee hives and chickens says someone used poison to kill about 700,000 bees.

Timothy Fitch of Sterling Heights said he discovered the mass slaughter Friday, the Detroit Free Press reported. He said the bees could have been killed anytime after Jan. 15.

Fitch reported the killing to Sterling Heights Police, but Lt. Luke Riley said it is unlikely anyone will be charged.

"There are no suspects; there's nothing to follow up on," Riley said. "He has no idea who did it. The reports been made, but there's really nothing to investigate."

The bees were in seven wooden towers. Fitch said they were sprayed with poison, killing the bees inside and rendering their stored honey unusable.

Fitch received a notice of a zoning violation in December responding to a complaint made in August. Sterling Heights, a Detroit suburb about 20 miles north of the city, allows bee- and poultry-keeping only on properties that are 8 acres or larger.
