City moves gun shows from nearby schools

GLENDALE, Calif., March 13 (UPI) -- In the wake of the massacre in Newtown, Conn., a California city has voted to discontinue holding gun shows at a city-owned auditorium, officials said.

Glendale City Council members opposed to the new ordinance said banning the shows is a knee-jerk reaction to gun violence making headlines in other states, the Los Angeles Daily News reported Wednesday.

Councilmen Ara Najarian and Dave Weaver lost the 3-2 vote to let the gun show continue at the Glendale Civic Auditorium, the newspaper said.

The new ordinance prohibits the possession or sale of firearms and ammunition on all city-owned property. The ban does not apply to established gun stores in the city.

The council began discussing the new ordinance a little more than a month after gunman Adam Lanza killed six adults and 20 children on Dec. 14 at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

The council said the civic auditorium is across the street from a community college and less than 1,000 feet from a public kindergarten-through 12th-grade public school.
