Six killed in Ohio crash ID'd

WARREN, Ohio, March 10 (UPI) -- Six teenagers were killed and two were injured Sunday when the sports utility vehicle they were in flipped and crashed into a pond in Warren, Ohio, police said.

All the victims were from Warren.

Killed were: Alexis Cayson, 19, Andrique Bennett, 14, Kirklan M. Behner, 15, Daylan Ray, 15, Brandon A. Murray, 17, and Ramone M. White, 15.

The survivors were Brian K. Henry, 18, and Asher C. Lewis, 15.

WFMJ-TV, Youngstown, reported police said the youths' Honda Passport veered off the left side of a road, hit a guardrail and overturned before ending up in the water about 7 a.m. Two occupants got out and called 911, the TV station said.

WKBN-TV, Youngstown, reported dive teams were called to the scene to help extricate the bodies.

Ohio Highway Patrol officials said none of the teens appeared to be wearing a seat belt.

WKBN-TV said police did not believe alcohol was a factor in the crash, but did not say what caused the accident.

"My heart and prayers go out to the families. It's a horrific morning," Warren Mayor Doug Franklin said.

5 firefighters hurt in N.J. blaze

HARRISON, N.J., March 10 (UPI) -- Five firefighters were injured Sunday when they were caught in an explosive backdraft while battling a five-alarm blaze in Harrison, N.J., authorities said.

The Jersey City firefighters' injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, though a battalion chief was bleeding from cuts he received from broken glass, WCBS-TV, New York, reported.

"When that glass blew out, he got it all in his face and his body," said Harrison fire Capt. Robert Gillen. "He was bleeding profusely."

The fire, which apparently started in a restaurant in a two-story, multi-use building, forced the rerouting of a St. Patrick's Day parade, WCBS-TV said.

WABC-TV, New York, reported the blaze likely started in the kitchen of a Mexican restaurant and quickly spread, engulfing the entire building, and one next to it.

WABC-TV said at least four families were displaced by the fire.

6.7, 4.8 quakes hit Papua New Guinea

FINSCHHAFEN, Papua New Guinea, March 11 (UPI) -- Two earthquakes, one 6.7-magnitude and the other 4.8, shook the New Britain region of Papua New Guinea Monday morning, seismologists said.

The temblors produced no tsunamis and there had been no reports of damage.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the larger quake, which occurred at 8:52 a.m.local time at a depth of 52 miles, was centered 27 miles east-southeast of Finschhafen, 86 miles east of Lae, 111 miles east-northeast of Wau and 198 miles north-northeast of Port Moresby.

The 4.8-magnitude quake occurred at at 8:11 a.m. at a depth of 40.8 miles, 37 miles southeast of Finschhafen, 92 miles east of Lae, 113 miles east-northeast of Wau and 190 miles north-northeast of Port Moresby.

Dulcie Logo of the Kokopo Village Resort told Radio New Zealand the bigger earthquake was short with a sharp jolt.

"It didn't do any damage, it just shook the place and everybody was awakened by the shake," Logo said.

S. Rice may become nat'l security adviser

WASHINGTON, March 10 (UPI) -- The United States' U.N. ambassador, Susan Rice, could become President Obama's next national security adviser, The Washington Post reported Sunday.

An administration official the Post described as familiar with Obama's thinking on the matter said Rice, 48, is the front-runner to succeed Thomas Donilon in the position this year.

Rice had been touted as a likely nominee for secretary of state, but Obama never put forth her name after congressional Republicans pounced on her for comments she made about the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, last September. That job went to John Kerry instead.

The national security post, however, would put Rice near Kerry in helping shape Obama's foreign policy.

The Post said Rice's U.N. colleagues anticipate she probably will be appointed sometime after the United States assumes the rotating presidency of the U.N. Security Council in July. The adviser's position does not require Senate confirmation.

"I think that Susan always maintains close relations with the president and his national security team, and that continues to be the case," Ben J. Rhodes, spokesman for the National Security Council, told the newspaper. "If anything, the way she handled the Benghazi situation -- and then the withdrawal -- only enhanced her relations here, because she did so with grace and good humor."
