Plane strikes bird, returns to airport

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., March 8 (UPI) -- A Spirit Airlines flight to Dallas returned safely to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Friday morning following a bird strike, airport officials said.

Flight 404, with 109 people aboard, struck a bird while in the air and immediately returned to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, WSVN-TV, Miami, reported.

There were no injuries aboard the plane, WPLG-TV, Fort Lauderdale, said.

The South Florida Sun Sentinel noted an average of 2,000 birds strikes per year to airliners and general aviation aircraft in the United States, about 100 of which typically occur at South Florida's three major airports.
