Jury selection begins for abortion doctor

PHILADELPHIA, March 4 (UPI) -- The trial of a Philadelphia doctor accused of performing late-term abortions and illegally selling prescriptions could take 10 to 12 weeks, prosecutors said.

Jury selection for Kermit Gosnell's trial began Monday.

The Women's Medical Society was initially raided in February 2010 on suspicion Gosnell was illegally selling thousands of prescriptions for Oxycodone, anti-anxiety medication and codeine-based cough syrup from 2008 through January 2010.

The raid uncovered stored, dismembered fetuses -- some of which were said to have been viable -- and evidence of late-term abortions.

Gosnell is charged with third-degree murder in the death of a woman who died after untrained staff members allegedly administered too much anesthesia during an abortion, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported. He also faces first-degree murder charges in the deaths of seven infants.

Nine of Gosnell's employees -- including his wife, Pearl Gosnell -- also face charges.

Medical school graduate Eileen O'Neill was to go on trial Monday to face charges she worked at the clinic without a medical license, her attorney, James Berardinelli, said.
