Arpaio out of hospital after fall

March 3, 2013 at 4:18 PM

PHOENIX, March 3 (UPI) -- Maricopa County, Ariz., Sheriff Joe Arpaio, the self-described "America's toughest sheriff," is out of the hospital after falling and breaking a shoulder bone.

Arpaio, 80, thanked supporters for their "kind wishes," The (Phoenix) Arizona Republic said Sunday. He made a Youtube video from his hospital bed, explaining what happened.

"I blame myself," Arpaio said. "I fell. I broke my arm. [I'll] tell you one thing. I wouldn't recommend that situation to anybody."

A department spokeswoman said Arpaio had been walking to lunch Thursday when he tripped on a sidewalk and fell, KPHO-TV, Phoenix said.

He is expected back to work in a few days and will be in a sling for about six weeks.
