ATLANTA, Feb. 28 (UPI) -- A former Georgia state trooper has been charged with homicide by vehicle for a New Year's Eve crash that killed the wife of the Atlanta Braves head trainer.

A grand jury in Fulton County handed up an indictment Wednesday that also charged Donald Crozier with reckless driving and violation of oath by a police officer, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. Crozier, who was on duty on Dec. 31, 2011, when he hit the car driven by Jeff Porter, the head athletic trainer for the Braves, was dismissed from the state police afterwards.

Porter, his wife, Kathy, their son and a friend were on their way to the Chick-fil-A Bowl at the Georgia Dome when Crozier hit them. Kathy Porter, 54, was pronounced dead at the scene while the others in the car were injured.

Investigators said Crozier, who was responding to a call, had his lights and siren on. But they found he did not reduce his speed enough at the intersection to ensure the way was clear.
