Man denies role in beheading murders

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Feb. 26 (UPI) -- A Florida man told a federal judge he made a big mistake telling an informant he was involved in the notorious 1995 murder of a South Florida couple.

Santiago Gonzalez, 49, of Davie, Fla., now faces at least 15 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to attempted drug-trafficking and weapons charges in Fort Lauderdale, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported Tuesday.

Gonzalez came to the attention of law enforcement after bragging to an informant that he was involved in "numerous kidnappings and robberies" as well as the murders of Frank Griga and Krisztina Furton, officials said.

Prosecutors have not charged him with the murder of the couple whose headless bodies were stuffed into 55-gallon oil drums and dumped into a canal by the Everglades in Miami-Dade County.

Their heads, with teeth removed to make identification difficult, were found along Interstate 75 in Broward County.

Three men have been convicted and imprisoned for their roles in the murders.
