Lane pleads guilty in school shooting

CHARDON, Ohio, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- T.J. Lane pleaded guilty Tuesday to killing three students and injuring three others in a shooting at his Chardon, Ohio, high school.

The plea, in Geuga County Common Pleas Court before Judge David Fuhry, came nearly a year to the day of the shooting rampage in Chardon High School's cafeteria that killed Demetrius Hewlin, 16, Russell King, 17, and Daniel Parmertor, 16.

Attorneys for Lane, 18, filed a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity last year. The change to a guilty plea, to charges of aggravated murder, attempted aggravated murder and felonious assault, precedes Lane's return to court March 19 for sentencing, The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer reported.

"Today's guilty plea by the defendant hopefully will give closure to the families, victims and the community, and allow all of us to move forward. All [the victims' families] are in 100 percent support of the plea agreement," prosecutor James Flaiz said.
