Firefighters Jose Ortiz and James Trainor were outside their fire station on Canal Street in Chinatown about 10:30 a.m. Sunday when they heard a man and woman screaming at each other. When they looked again, the man, identified by police as Ming Guang Huang, 28, hacking at his wife, Jinyia You, 24, with a meat cleaver.
"While we were working on the rigs getting ready for our day tour, I saw a man dragging a woman who was crying and screaming down the street," said Ortiz, 51, an 18-year FDNY veteran. "Once I got closer, the man starts hacking at the woman. He hits her six, eight, maybe 10 times. So, we [he and Trainor] bum-rush him and get him against the fence."
Security video captures the two men subduing Huang as You, bleeding profusely, runs from the scene, the New York Post said Monday.
A third firefighter, Shane Clarke, pursued You down Canal Street and eventually he and a police patrol located her several blocks away, screaming for help.
You is listed in critical condition at Bellevue Hospital, but is expected to survive, officials said.
