'Cannibal cop' wife testifies in court

NEW YORK, Feb. 25 (UPI) -- The estranged wife of New York City's so-called cannibal cop testified Monday she left him a month before his arrest after discovering his alleged plot.

Kathleen Mangan said she fled the home she shared with New York police officer Gilberto Valle after discovering evidence on their shared computer of Valle's desire to "slow cook" and eat women she knew. Prosecutors said in pretrial briefs Mangan found evidence Valle had posted photos of his intended victims online and left with her year-old child shortly thereafter.

She testified she gave prosecutors and police access to the apartment before she left, including the computer with the alleged evidence, the New York Daily News reported Monday.

Valle, 28, faces charges he conspired to torture and eat women. He was arrested on a conspiracy to commit kidnapping charge Oct. 24.

His defense team is expected, based on pretrial filings, to argue Valle was merely roll playing on a fetish website and never intended to seriously act on his sexual urges.
