C. Everett Koop dies at 96

HANOVER, N.H., Feb. 25 (UPI) -- Former U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop died Monday at his home in Hanover, N.H., an associate said. He was 96.

An executive assistant at the C. Everett Koop Institute at Dartmouth confirmed his death to New Hampshire Public Radio. The cause of death wasn't reported.

Koop, a pediatric surgeon who graduated from Dartmouth College in 1937, was appointed surgeon general by President Ronald Reagan and served from 1982 to 1989.

NHPR said Koop's biography at the institute said he was awarded the Public Health Distinguished Service Medal in 1983 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1995.
