BOULDER, Colo., Feb. 20 (UPI) -- A Colorado lawmaker opposed to guns on college campuses said coeds can avoid rape by using "call boxes," "safe zones" and "whistles."

Democratic State Rep. Joe Salazar told the Colorado House of Representatives that women should not carry firearms for protection because they could accidentally shoot someone, ABCNews.com reported.

"It's why we have call boxes, it's why we have safe zones, it's why we have the whistles," Salazar said. "Because you just don't know who you're gonna be shooting at."

Salazar's comments came near the end of a 12-hour debate on a package of gun safety bills, including one that would ban carrying concealed weapons on college campuses.

Following passage of the package, the University of Colorado released a list of crime prevention tactics for coeds Wednesday including suggestions to "tell your attacker that you have a disease or are menstruating" or that "vomiting or urinating may also convince the attacker to leave you alone."
