CHATTANOOGA, Tenn., Feb. 20 (UPI) -- Former U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Richard Gilliland admitted Wednesday he took thousands of dollars in bribes from contractors while he was deployed in Iraq.

Gilliland, 44, of Fayetteville, Tenn., pleaded guilty in federal court to a criminal information charging him with one count of conspiracy to accept illegal bribes, the U.S. attorney's office said in a release.

Gilliland admitted taking about $27,200 and a laptop computer from two defense contractors in return for agreeing to help them acquire used and non-working generators from the Defense Reutilization and Marketing Office.

The bribes were offered in 2007 and 2008 while he was a pay agent at Camp Victory in Iraq.
