The mother, 13-year-old Kamili, gave birth to a healthy 164-pound female calf Saturday, her seventh, but zoo personnel became concerned over her nominal milk production and poor health after the birth, a zoo press release said Tuesday.
Kamili was humanely euthanized Sunday, and preliminary findings from the necropsy, or animal autopsy, indicate heart disease as the primary ailment, the Zoo said.
Zookeepers said the baby calf was moved to an off-exhibit barn to reduce its stress and aid in its hand-provided round-the-clock feeding schedule.
