New Englanders take latest storm in stride

BOSTON, Feb. 18 (UPI) -- New Englanders shrugged off another weekend snowstorm. This one dumped up to 5 inches of snow that was whipped around by strong winds.

"We're New Englanders, we know how to deal with it," John Cotellessa, a 50-year-old diner owner who had to deal with a short storm-caused power outage, told The Boston Globe. "This is a standard storm. It's not a blizzard, it's just snowing out."

Darren Durfee, 46, of Boston who was busy shoveling snow, said it was "depressing" after the previous weekend's big blizzard that walloped the region.

"But it is what it is," he said. "You live in New England."

Winds were gusty, with readings of more than 50 mph in the Cape Code area.

Boston officials reported about 5 inches of snow Sunday at Logan Airport.

"This is certainly a different kind of weather event than last week," said John Guilfoil, a spokesman for Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino.

"A good thing about a snow like this is you're not getting 2 or 3 or 4 inches of snowfall an hour. It's much more manageable."

The Globe said the storm slowed travel for a time but didn't cause any major accidents and only knocked out power to fewer than 2,000 homes in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

Forecasters are calling for warmer weather with rain by Wednesday.

"Skies are clearing out, with lots of sun," said William Babcock of the National Weather Service.

"Warm weather is coming," Babcock said. "The warmer air will be working its way in. We just have to be patient. We'll see more pleasant temperatures with patience."
