Natty thieves smash and grab jewelry

Feb. 18, 2013 at 3:44 PM

NEW YORK, Feb. 18 (UPI) -- A weekend smash-and-dash heist at New York's Four Seasons Hotel netted two nattily dressed thieves some expensive jewelry.

The well-dressed young men walked into the lobby about 2 a.m. Saturday. City police spokesman Paul J. Browne said while one spoke to the hotel staff, the other, who was wearing a trench coat, used a sledgehammer to smash a jewelry display case, The New York Times reported.

The thief snatched some jewelry, including wristwatches and a pendant and chain, Browne said. While there were reports the items were worth $2 million, Brown said the total was $167,000.

Police had yet to find the culprits, but had released surveillance photos of the two thieves.
