PORTLAND, Ore., Feb. 18 (UPI) -- Police officers in Portland, Ore., shot and killed a man in a hospital's parking lot, a police spokesman said.

A report of an armed man in the parking lot Sunday evening sent police officers to the Portland Adventist Medical Center, some of whom worked to lock down the hospital, police Sgt. Pete Simpson said.

Other police officers confronted the man and "shots were fired," a police news release stated Monday.

The man died at the scene, and no officers were injured, The (Portland) Oregonian reported Monday.

Police released few details of the incident. The man was not identified and it was not yet clear what circumstances led to the shooting, the newspaper said.

During the lockdown the hospital had limited access for staff essential to patient care, KATU-TV, Portland, said.

Hospital spokesman Judy Leach said the hospital has a protocol for situation such as Sunday's, referred to as a "code silver."
