No charges against Detroit prep coach

DETROIT, Feb. 14 (UPI) -- Prosecutors said no charges would be filed against a basketball coach who shot two alleged muggers outside his Detroit high school.

One of the two teenage suspects died on the Feb. 1 confrontation outside Martin Luther King High School. Wayne County prosecutors, however, said assistant coach Ernest Robinson did not violate the law.

"This case is a textbook example of lawful self-defense," said Prosecutor Kym Worthy. "The coach is a victim, so we are charging the 15-year-old accomplice in this case."

Robinson, a reserve police officer, said he had walked to his car with two female students when the suspects accosted them with a gun. Robinson told the two girls to make a run for it and then pulled his own pistol and opened fire.

Michael Scott, 16, a ninth grader at the school, was killed. His alleged accomplice was charged as an adult and scheduled for arraignment Saturday.

The Detroit News said the incident was one of three self-defense shootings in Detroit this month. One alleged stickup man was killed and two juveniles were wounded in the other incidents.
