HOUSTON, Feb. 13 (UPI) -- Houston police located the discarded remains of a fetus, after a woman told a hospital she took pills to induce an abortion.

The unidentified woman, 29, delivered the fetus in her family's home, wrapped it in a blanket and disposed of it, city police Sgt. James Racus said, adding the woman then went to Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital in Houston, bleeding heavily. A hospital nurse contacted police.

Doctors said the woman lost considerable blood but was expected to recover. The nature of the pills was not identified.

Racus said she induced an abortion because she said she could not afford to care for a child. He said she added her family was unaware she was pregnant and that she may be in the country illegally and fearful of authorities.

No charges had been filed in the case.

The Houston Chronicle reported Wednesday there was conflicting information about the location of the fetus when it was found by police. KHOU-TV said it was found in southwest Houston; KPRC-TV reported it was found at the Stafford, Texas, home of the woman's relatives.
