Thousands march for Trayvon Martin

Feb. 10, 2013 at 11:40 AM   |   Comments

MIAMI, Feb. 10 (UPI) -- Thousands of people gathered for a march in honor of Trayvon Martin nearly one year after the unarmed teen was shot to death in Florida.

The Trayvon Martin Foundation held the I am Trayvon Day of Remembrance Community Peace Walk Saturday in north Miami-Dade County, The Miami Herald reported.

"We're here to let the community, and particularly teenagers, know that they have the right to walk in peace without being followed, without being harmed and without being killed," Trayvon's mother, Sybrina Fulton, said at the start of the event.

Academy Award-winning actor Jamie Foxx, who has been vocal about the teen's killing, was in attendance, the Orlando Sentinel reported.

"Every once in a while, something comes around that touches you like nothing else," Foxx said.

"I wasn't going to miss this day, and I'm not going to miss a day in the future when we can step out and remember Trayvon."

Feb. 26 is the anniversary of the shooting death of Martin, a black teen, by George Zimmerman, a Hispanic-American who said the shooting was justified under Florida's stand your ground law. Prosecutors said Zimmerman profiled, pursued and killed the 17-year-old in Sanford. The defense said Martin attacked Zimmerman.

The trial is set for June, the Sentinel reported.
