WASHINGTON, Feb. 8 (UPI) -- Second-generation Americans are substantially better off than their parents in key measures of socio-economic attainment, a Pew Research Center analysis says.

The analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data indicates the 20 million U.S.-born adult children of immigrants have higher incomes and more college degrees and fewer live in poverty, a Pew Research Center statement said Friday.

The study noted Hispanic- and Asian-Americans make up about 70 percent of adult immigrants and about half of today's adult second generation.

The second generation outpaces the first in median household income, $58,000 to $46,000; college degrees, 39 percent to 29 percent; and home ownership, 64 percent to 51 percent. About 6-in-10 in the second generation consider themselves "typical Americans," and about 9-in-10 are proficient in speaking English, the analysis said.
