BRIDGEWATER, Conn., Feb. 7 (UPI) -- Police said they expected to make an arrest soon in the theft of a necklace from the body of a woman at a funeral home in Bridgewater, Conn.
Lt. Thomas Schlatz said Bridgewater police identified a suspect, expressing confidence that an arrest would be "fairly imminent," the Boston Herald reported Thursday.
Police say workers at the funeral home were preparing for 98-year-old Mary Baroni's service on Jan. 28, when a man, saying he was a relative, arrived two hours early and asked to pay his respects. After he left, the director noticed a gold necklace and heart-shaped pendant was missing and called police.
"To take it right from the casket prior to the funeral services, it's pretty disgusting," Schlatz said.
Police weren't commenting on whether the theft was, in fact, a relative, the Globe said.
Baroni's son-in-law, Dennis Williams, called the incident "shocking [and] inexcusable."
"Someone really needs help to go to the extremes to do something like this," Williams said, adding that family wants the necklace returned, as well as "justice -- and justice that can demonstrate that if you do wrong, you're going to be punished for it."
