Prison sentence for biting off coach's ear

Feb. 7, 2013 at 3:43 PM

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Feb. 7 (UPI) -- A youth basketball coach was convicted of mayhem in biting off part of an opposing coach's ear after a game in Springfield, Mass.

Timothy Forbes, 34, was sentenced Wednesday in Hampden, Mass. Superior Court to 3-4 years in prison, with credit for 10 months served while awaiting trial, court records said.

Jose Feliciano, 35, lost 2 inches of his left ear when Forbes attacked him during a traditional post-game handshake after a Catholic Youth Organization championship game last March, prosecutors said.

"The kids (at the game) weren't just exposed to a fistfight or a pushing match, which would have been bad enough. They were exposed to the biting off of someone's ear. It's horrific," said Hampden District Attorney Mark. G. Mastroianni.

Feliciano underwent extensive plastic surgery but now has one ear significantly smaller than the other, the Boston Herald reported Thursday.

"I'm glad it's over," Feliciano said through his wife, Sheileen, 33. "We are now trying to move forward and I am back coaching again."
