Police who were called to the residence by a landlord said they found Johnson and Koecher intoxicated, and an odor in the residence so overpowering officers had trouble breathing.

Koecher was found in the bedroom, "almost lying atop" the child, the police report said. It noted the presence of garbage throughout the residence, a "putrid" odor, dirty laundry and food on the floor and a table, used tampons "all over the bathroom floor" and a toilet plugged with waste.

Police took the parents to a detox center and the child to a hospital, the (St. Paul, Minn.) Pioneer Press reported Thursday.

Johnson insulted, and attempted to punch, a police officer as he was being removed from the residence, the complaint said.
