ANNAPOLIS, Md., Feb. 6 (UPI) -- A Maryland man whose 5-year-old son drank his illegal methadone said he waited more than an hour to call for help because he was frightened.

Paul K. Brooks Sr., 28, of Severn is on trial on child abuse charges in Anne Arundel County Circuit Court.

In opening statements Brooks' attorney admitted his client used poor judgment but denied he was guilty of child abuse, The Baltimore Sun reported.

Brooks' wife Kimberley, who also faces charges in the case, called a poison center but did not follow advice to dial 911 until after the boy stopped breathing.

Emergency workers were able to revive Paul "Kris" Brooks Jr., prosecutor Sandra F. Howell said.
