Gun range suspect was in mental hospital

LANCASTER, Texas, Feb. 4 (UPI) -- The man accused in the Texas killing of retired Navy SEAL Chris Kyle and another man was taken to a mental hospital in September, officials said.

A Lancaster police report said Eddie Ray Routh, 25, was given a mental evaluation after "threatening to kill himself and his family," The Dallas Morning News reported. He underwent a second evaluation last month.

Lancaster police responded to a report of a major disturbance at his home Sept. 2. The newspaper said when officers arrived they found Routh crying and smelling of alcohol, and not wearing shoes or a shirt.

Routh's mother Jodi told police her son had been drinking and became upset when his father said he was going to sell his gun.

Police put Routh into protective custody and took him to Green Oaks Psychiatric Hospital for a mental evaluation, the Morning News said.

Another police report said Routh's mother called officers May 14 to report a burglary in which pill bottles were taken, and Routh was a suspect, the newspaper said, but it was unclear what drugs were taken.

Dallas police say on Jan. 19, a woman called them to her apartment in North Dallas because she feared for Routh's safety, the newspaper said. It was the second time he was taken to Green Oaks in four months.

Police also said Routh was hit with a stun gun after becoming aggressive with jailers Sunday.

Routh, a former Marine who served in Iraq, was jailed on $3 million bail.

Erath County Sheriff Tommy Bryant said Kyle, a 38-year-old retired SEAL sniper with the most confirmed kills and the author of the book "American Sniper," his neighbor Chad Littlefield, 35, of Midlothian and Routh arrived at the Rough Creek Lodge and Resort near Glen Rose about 3:15 p.m. Saturday. Less than 2 hours later Kyle and Littlefield were found dead by a hunting guide and Routh was on the run in Kyle's Ford pickup truck, the Morning News reported.
