Murder convict freed in error, in custody

CHICAGO, Feb. 2 (UPI) -- A convicted killer who was mistakenly released from an Illinois jail is back in custody, officials said.

Steven Robbins, who is serving a 60-year-sentence at Indiana State Prison for fatally shooting a Kentucky man in 2002, was arrested late Friday in Kankakee, Ill., two days after he was mistakenly released from the Cook County jail, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Robbins, 44, was transferred to the county jail for a court appearance Wednesday on armed violence and drug charges, which were dismissed.

He was released after his court appearance because there was no indication in his jail paperwork that he was ordered to remain in custody, said Frank Bilecki, a spokesman for Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart.

Bilecki said Robbins was "found at the home of an acquaintance, watching TV. They caught him totally off guard."

Dart said his office was looking into why jail officials had no paperwork showing Robbins was serving time in Indiana for murder.

"We let people down, no mistake about it," Dart said. "Our office did not operate the way it should have, clearly."
