AUSTIN, Texas, Jan. 29 (UPI) -- The TrendTopper MediaBuzz ranking has MIT beating Harvard for the top position among U.S. universities for the second year in a row.

TrendTopper Media Buzz said following the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard were Columbia University, Stanford University and the University of California, Berkeley, which moved up nine spots and was the highest ranked public university in the rankings.

Yale University, the University of Chicago, the University of Texas at Austin, Cornell University and Princeton University rounded out the Top Ten American Universities.

Public universities improved significantly in the rankings this year, with 13 of the Top 25 now public universities.

TrendTopper MediaBuzz ranks universities every nine months, and measures schools by brand equity, using the same techniques used to measure the appeal of any other product, such as cars.

The company has separate college rankings as well, which Richmond topped, followed by Bucknell.

The release states that the rest of the Top 25 are much different from the previous ranking, with Middlebury and Vassar jumping into the Top 25.

Babson jumped 16 spots and the U.S. Naval Academy gained 11.
