Police: Handcuffed man shoots officer

NEW ORLEANS, Jan. 27 (UPI) -- A New Orleans man in handcuffs managed to grab a police officer's holstered gun and shoot the officer in the leg Sunday, officials said.

Sgt. Sidney Jackson was taken to Interim LSU Public Hospital in good condition with a bullet wound to the upper right leg, police said.

Jackson and at least one other officer were responding to a report of a man causing a disturbance inside a food market. When they got there, the suspect, identified as Damon Jones, 41, allegedly began approaching the officers in "a non-compliant combative manner," the police department said in a statement.

Jones grew agitated, so the officers handcuffed him and attempted to place him in the back of the squad car, The (New Orleans) Times-Picayune reported. It was at this point that Jones grabbed Jackson's gun, shooting him in the process, officials said.

Police charged Jones with disturbing the peace, resisting arrest and aggravated battery on a police officer, the newspaper said.
